For grain growers and grain accumulators protecting their stored grain from insect attack is essential if they are to maintain its quality and value. K-Obiol®EC Combi from Bayer is available in 5L and 10L packs for farmers who store their own grain.
K-Obiol can be used on any cereal grains including wheat, rice, maize, malting barley and sorghum. It is not suitable for use on oil seeds and pulses.
It should be applied at the time the grain is loaded into the silo/storage. This ensures the grain is protected at all times and reduces the risk of the grain becoming infested. Provided it is used at the label rate and the grain receives only a single treatment before consumption there are no end uses in Australia where K-Obiol treated grain is not acceptable apart from “organic” or pesticide residue free (PRF) markets.
K-Obiol can be used in sealed or unsealed storage. Because it is a liquid it is important to ensure the grain is evenly treated with the K-Obiol as it is augured / elevated into the storage. Unlike fumigants, which are gases, it will not evenly distribute itself through the stored grain over time.
If your storage is not gas tight it is recommended grain always be treated with K-Obiol the first time it is loaded into the storage. This is because the options for treating grain once it is infested are limited and require moving the grain to gas tight storage and treating it for several days to eradicate insects at all their life stages. Better to be safe from the start and not risk losing value or missing a sale because the grain needs treatment before being acceptable to the buyer.
